Number one seeded La Costa Canyon varsity boys basketball fell to the visiting number fourth-seeded Lawndale Cardinals 60-46 in the CIF State Division II Southern California Semi-Finals Tuesday night.

The Mavericks came into the bracket sporting a 21-6 regular season and 22-7 overall record after losing to the Saint Augustine Saints in the semi-final of the CIF San Diego Section Open Division.

Eventually the Mavs would go on to defeat Tesoro and Santa Barbara High Schools by scores of 74-53 and 69-44 in the preliminary rounds of the state bracket en route to their Tuesday contest against Lawndale.

As for the Lawndale Cardinals, the Los Angeles county squad came into the Division II bracket after reaching the CIF Southern Section Boys Division 2AA Championship game. The Cards lost the game 103-98 in double overtime to Anaheim’s Canyon High School.

Both teams came into Tuesday night’s battle with something left to prove. However, it was the Cardinals and their two 6’10” big men Chimezie Metu and Brodricks Jones who downed LCC by a slim 14 points.

Jones and Metu combined for 25 points and 17 rebounds on the night with Metu blocking three Maverick shots on goal. Metu, a USC Trojan commit, led the Cardinals in scoring with 21 and ended the night dunking on the LCC’s defense three times. Jones, a San Diego State commit himself, posted an abnormally quiet scoreboard but his six key rebound turned the tide for Lawndale.

While the red and black’s dominating offensive performance largely contributed to their 14-point victory, the Mavs were down early due to a lack of ball security.

Despite two double-digit scorers in Tommy McCarthy (22) and Travis Fuller (17), LCC found a way to turn the ball over a total of 12 times.

Fuller lead both teams in terms of rebounding with 13 boards, two more than Lawndale’s Metu.

The now 23-11 Cards will take on the La Mirada Matadors on Saturday, March 21st at 12:00 PM at California State University, Long Beach.

The 24-8 Mavs did not accomplish their goal of winning a CIF championship ring, but they still have a lot to look forward to. Seniors McCarthy (Harvard), Fuller (Brown) and Brady Twombly (Northern Arizona) will be playing division I basketball in the fall and will be looking to take their basketball talents to the next level.
