The 2015 Maverick athletic season didn’t waste time getting started, as Maverick Football was welcomed back to La Costa Canyon High School Friday night.

The season opener came against one of the most unlikely opponents, in the form of the Desert Vista Thunder traveling from Phoenix, Arizona. Desert Vista happened to be one of the multiple teams coming west from the desert to take on some of San Diego’s best this past weekend.

The Thunder came into Friday night with a game already under their belts; the team dropped their season opener the previous week to Highland High School 28-25.

As for LCC, the Mavericks came into Friday night’s contest with a new crop of talent, along with some new faces of their own. First-year starters as a part of the Varsity squad included lineman Evan Atkin, defensive end Alec Varteressian, and quarterback Tanner Clark (Clark played last season as a receiver as well), among others.

As Djay Sy and Jaden Faulk awaited the opening kickoff on the newly installed turf at La Costa Canyon High School, a highly anticipated 2015 season was set to begin.

The Maverick offense immediately went three-and-out to begin the game, and were forced to punt, allowing Desert Vista quarterback Nick Thomas and his offense to take the field for the first time.

After receiving excellent field position off the Maverick punt, quarterback Thomas mixed in a variety of plays to get the Thunder well within field goal range, allowing future Louisiana State University kicker Connor Culp to put the first points of the night on the board.

Two series later, with Desert Vista’s offense on the field, a short pass to Thunder receiver Malik Fuller was jarred loose by first-year free safety Will Peartree, allowing the Mavericks to recover the fumble near midfield.

The Mavericks offense continued on to march down the field into the endzone and put six points on the board, thanks to decent back-to-back gains by senior running back Djay Sy; at the end of the first quarter, La Costa Canyon led Desert Vista 7-3.

Later in the half, the running game of the Desert Vista Thunder came alive, as Lelon Dillard exploded for a 75-yard gain downfield, giving fellow running back Isaiah Ford the easy score on the ground around the right side.

Then, with the clock stopped at four seconds before the half, senior Maverick kicker Jake Koehnke successfully hit a 49-yard field goal to send the game to halftime, tied at ten points apiece.

Desert Vista got the ball back to begin the second half, and on a screen pass intended for a receiver on the left side, Thunder quarterback Nick Thomas threw the football right into the hands of Maverick DB Curren Castro. It didn’t take much time into Castro’s run before the ball was popped out and loose once again, only to roll into the endzone, as a herd of Maverick defenders pounced on the ball for another touchdown.

After back-and-forth action in the third quarter, the game went to the fourth, La Costa Canyon leading 20-17. While still a close lead, things looked bright for the Mavericks in the opening act of their 2015 campaign. That is, until the Maverick defense proceeded to surrender two scores following a muffed punt in the last quarter of the action. The La Costa Canyon defense went away in the fourth quarter while Desert Vista took firm control of their lead, as well as the game, marching forward to a 31-23 victory over the Mavs.

Maverick Football will now prepare for next week’s contest, as they look to bounce back on the road against the Trabuco Hills Mustangs on Friday, September 4th at 7:00 pm. The Mustangs, who have lost two of their top stars during the offseason, were toppled by Rancho Cucamonga 45-10 last Friday night.

MavLife Sports will have live broadcast coverage of the game beginning at 6:45 pm on the MavLife Sports Stream on ustream.com. Follow @MavLifeSports on Twitter and Instagram for the latest news, scores, and updates in Maverick Athletics.
