Even though 9,967 people were killed in 2014 due to alcohol related car crashes, many high school students are unaware of the effects alcoholism has on their ability to drive safely. Many are aware that drinking and driving is illegal, however the realization of how often an accident occurs doesn’t always set in.

It is not everyday that high school drivers have the opportunity to be educated about the true effects of alcohol related accidents on the road. Sponsored by the California Highway Patrol and brought to LCC by the LCC Foundation and the San Dieguito Alliance for a Drug Free Youth, “Every 15 Minutes” brought that education right onto campus.

The name “Every 15 Minutes” signifies the fact that every 15 minutes, someone is killed from a car accident in which the driver was distracted from being under the influence.

With the simulated deaths of well-known and beloved students in a car crash scene laid out on the softball field, “Every 15 Minutes” made the effects of driving under the influence a very real scene for students.

Officers read out an “obituary” written by the parents of the “living -dead”student to the class every 15 minutes from the time school started to the time of the assembly. The student was considered ‘dead’ for the remainder of the day, marked with bloody makeup and ripped clothing.

The main purpose of “Every 15 Minutes” is to spread awareness to high schoolers about driving under the influence and the effects it could have on anyone.
