Keeping the environment clean and maintaining a green planet should always be a priority.

However, there is a special day in which a lot of people take action to help the environment here on Earth, in Encinitas, and at La Costa Canyon High School.

Earth Day takes place on Saturday, April 22. A lot of people are not aware of this important day, which is why others take it upon themselves to take certain actions that have an effect on others.

“Earth Day lets people get in touch with nature, and makes them think about how they could save the planet,” sophomore Jake Auger said.

Sometimes, it’s the simple things that make a difference in the environment.

“People don’t realize how much of a difference they can make in keeping the earth clean,” sophomore Maddie Wilmot said.

Earth Day stresses the importance of picking up trash, conserving water, taking care of plants, and recycling waste whenever possible in order to maintain a healthy environment.

These are all easy things to do, but are very easy to overlook every day. This is why Earth Day plays an important role, each year when it rolls around, it serves as a reminder to citizens to do their part in taking care of the Earth.

Chemistry teacher June Honsberger helps the students of LCC to remember the value of Earth Day.

“In Mrs. Honsberger’s class, we planted some plants in honor of earth day, and it’s really fun,” Ashlyn Houston said.

Each year around Earth Day, Honsberger and her students help keep the environment clean around campus.

It doesn’t take much to make a difference in the community, and Earth Day is a reminder to take care of the planet.
