On Thursday morning, April 27, 2017, Karen Franke’s ninth grade English class participated in an activity based on William Golding’s novel The Lord of the Flies. As most freshmen classes read this novel, Franke decided to do it a little differently than most classes.

“I’m looking forward to this activity and I know the book pretty well” freshman Jorge Montgomery said prior to the competition.

For the first part of the activity, the class had to separate into relay teams on one side of the grassy meadow on campus. On the other side of the meadow, Franke had a lot of cardboard boxes and five candy packets such as M&M’s or Starbursts lined up as well.

Students answered a question about the book and then had to race over to pick a cardboard box or material so they could build a hut or fort like the characters did in the novel.

“The point of this activity was for review but Ms. Franke made it fun by adding a little competition” freshman Sarah Heggie said.

The next part of the activity had the students using their collected cardboard boxes from the race to see which team could build the sturdiest and tallest tower. Whichever team won this activity would not have to take the final based on novel.

“I really want to win because not taking the final would relieve a lot of stress” says Heggie.

Students were able to learn about the novel in a different way than most classes. Franke said the activities put together were meant for students to become more engaged and physical with the novel.

“Its nice to get outside and play a game while learning about the book rather than sitting at a desk for two hours” Montgomery said.
