The Humane Society reports that approximately 2.7 millions animals are euthanized every year in the United States. These reasons could be from old age, sickness or other reasons to end an animal’s suffering. However, not all euthanizations are done in a trained veterinarian’s office with an expert who is trained in putting an animal to sleep gently. Some animals do not have the calming presence of their owner nearby. Some animals are euthanized in horrific gas chambers where their last moments are filled with fear. The Humane Society of the United States has succeeded in putting a stop to at least 25 chambers in 15 states. They have caused Pennsylvania and Texas to outright ban the practice, but seven states still actively use the chambers. This cruel system of fear needs to be stopped.

Gas chambers are neither compassionate nor humane to these animals who have done nothing wrong. The poor animals are trapped in a pitch black cramped box where they feel panic and desperation before they fall victim to the gas. Usually, when an animal is euthanized at a veterinarian, the drugs make the animal lose consciousness within a couple of seconds, causing them to feel no fear. In the gas chambers, no such mercy is given to the undeserving animals, and it could take several minutes for the pet to finally succumb.

The work of the Humane Society has been relatively successful. Starting in 2012, the Humane Society has made much progress in stopping the use of the chambers. They have shut down many chambers in order to make sure that pets are treated humanely do not have to suffer through pain and fear in their final moments. However, not all of these chambers have been shut down yet. This is why the Humane Society actively supports the belief of shutting down all of these chambers and making sure that these horrific acts are no longer committed.

This is one of the least humane ways to say goodbye to a pet. No animal should have to say goodbye to the world this way and no animal should have to suffer like this. It is great that the Humane Society is working to shut these down, but as long as these disgusting practices are still active, we should be ashamed. And until they are all shut down, we should not stop fighting them.
