It all began the year LCC opened up, 1996, in which a rivalry was born that was full of competitive spirit. The question remains though: is it a healthy competition or a negative one? I feel as though without a little rivalry or competition, there is no point to rally up for football games or have a fun friendly competition.

When I attend football games, the unified feeling of rivalry brings out the students’ competitive spirit; which makes games more exciting and creates a larger motive for others to attend. The rivalry also brings the students closer and makes them more excited about their team/highschool. As I have experienced, more people attend a rival game where the opposing teams play their hardest versus the instances in which the distinct feeling of rivalry is not there. This point isn’t limited to just football games, but it can be observed in most sports and school activities. An example of this is when my cross country team attends a cross country meet against Torrey Pines. We, along with LCC’s other sports teams, have good character and sportsmanship, but we also make sure to keep a competitive spirit and have a fun time while racing against each other.

Although many feel as though rivalry can set back a team’s self confidence if they lose to their rival, I feel as though it helps a team become more competitive and helps them learn from their mistakes. These are skills that athletes can use for the rest of their life. I also feel as though rivalry can push someone towards their personal goals due to the lessons of self-confidence they can learn when competing in a sport or any other activity.

In conclusion, rivalry is necessary because it brings out a competitive spirit and can unify a school or team. The rivalry between La Costa Canyon and Torrey Pines remains healthy and I strongly support school competition as long as everyone involved has a fun and memorable time.
