On Tuesday afternoon, the La Costa Canyon Maverick Varsity field hockey team defeated the Canyon Crest Academy Ravens 3-1 in the 2015 CIF Open Division quarterfinals.

The Ravens held a 19-3 record coming into the contest against the Lady Mavs. Against fellow Division I opponents in 2015, CCA had scored 31 goals and had 12 goals scored against them. The Mavericks, on the other hand, have scored 40 and surrendered only 2 goals this year total.

CCA began strong, going up on the Mavs 1-0 in the first period of play. Although the red and black tried to score again multiple times throughout the first half, senior goaltender Jodi Steigerwald saved six shots on goal, holding the Ravens to a one goal lead. The next scoring action came again in the first half from Senior Maverick Chandler Waldal, tying the single elimination playoff game up at one goal apiece.

In the second half, the Mavericks came out strong, as junior Lindsey Fessinger scored another goal to take the lead 2-1. Though trailing, the Ravens remained focused and intent through the second half, but were unable to put anything together. Another Maverick goal was allowed late, this time from senior Mackenzie Peterson, making the score 3-1 in favor of LCC.

The Mavericks would go on to win the game, and Fessinger was awarded MaxPreps Player of The Game. Although Fessinger was awarded Player of the Game, goalkeeper Jodi Steigerwald had a total of six saves out of seven total shots on goal.
The Lady Mavericks will next travel on the road to Serra High School on Thursday, November 19, to take on the 24-1 Conquistadors in the semifinals of the 2015 CIF Open Division Championship tournament. The two teams squared off earlier this year on September 29th. Even though the Mavs put up a good fight, the Conquistadors conquered the game, winning 3-1 after a shootout.
