Since 1974 La Costa Canyon and Torrey Pines have maintained a healthy rivalry which takes the form of the last game of the season. This game is always an intense one, with emotions high and egos on the line in the Beach Bowl. The winner of this friendly competition has received the Golden Surfboard award since it was officiated.
Last year the Golden Surfboard was taken back from Torrey Pines by LCC and now the Falcons have returned the favor. The varsity football game on November the 11th was soundly won 41-9 leaving Torrey with the Golden Surfboard and the Mavs with a feeling of loss. But this feeling is not temporary as the mavs are not playing the Falcons again this season playoffs included.
To put it bluntly, the LCC defense just didn’t fit the bill that the Torrey Pines’ running back Sully Obrian was putting out, as he went on to rush over 100 yards and scored 4 touchdowns, keeping their momentum rolling. But that wasn’t all as the Maverick offense just didn’t cut it against the Falcon defense, achieving only 76 rushing yards. The Mavs did however total 214 passing yards, which is their 4th highest total.
