One line holds no meaning or context other than just being a streak on a paper. It’s when more lines are added, shaping a subject on paper, weaving the emotions and knowledge of the artist into the intricate interlacing strokes that an art piece is formed. Coming down the simplified definition of what defines art, a compilation of lines. Lines that hold so much more meaning and complexity than what the viewer can begin to understand.

This week, La Costa Canyon High School held their annual art show (May 16-19th) in the Learning Commons, featuring artworks from varying AP Art classes offered as well as entries for the Del Mar Fair. When I went to experience the multiple art pieces, I was captivated by Sarah Foltyn’s series (above picture) which concentrates on capturing the realism and life of animals and a person through different mediums. Some examples would be chalk pastel, colored pencil, oil paint, and ball-point pen. Being an artist myself, I know the skill a person must hold to be able to excel in using so many different mediums and still be able to make the subject matter come across as holding three-dimensional form.

Out of all her pieces that were presented, I fell in love with this one, just for the sheer reaction that the viewers get from looking at the roaring tiger, but because Foltyn used such a day to day medium,ball-point pen, to complete it. Ever since the invention of the ball-point pen in the 19th century, it has grown in popularity throughout the traditional artist because of it’s affordability and being fairly easy to carry around. Even some of the most well-known artists, such as Andy Warhol, started their entire art career on sketches and pieces using a pen. Of course comparing, Andy Warhol’s early pop art to Foltyn’s realist art can seem like a stretch but it goes to show that the expensiveness of an artist material does not define them as being good.

By starting off with the basic medium, Sarah Foltyn has come to learn how to excel at it, and her confidence shows through the multiple hatch marks of lines on this sheet of paper. Many beginner artists lacking confidence in their own art, cause the pieces to come off flat and underwhelming even if everything is technically perfect because they aren’t putting a little piece of themselves into every stroke.
