The LCC Art Show showcased people from all different classes, displayed countless different themes, and was an indicator of the artistic diversity at La Costa Canyon High School.

“I saw myself within the panda, so I wanted to give it some human like characteristics to represent my connection to the animal.””

— Diego Soriano

Junior Diego Soriano’s ink on paper adaptation of a single, happy panda, surrounded by bamboo presents a modern, black and white take on the image of a panda, but continues with the theme outside of the actual animal, coloring the bamboo shoots black and white as well.

The panda’s soft expression displays an almost human-like emotion, serving to humanize the panda.

“I saw myself within the panda, so I wanted to give it some human-like characteristics to represent my connection to the animal,” Soriano said.

With the negative white space in the background, hash marks are displayed in order to fill in this negative space and gives the mostly empty picture more content, while also giving it a little bit of an abstract feel by using the inorganic shape of the hash-marks.

This mixture of the semi-abstract background with the attempted realism of the panda leads to a strange combination, though interesting nonetheless.
